The look away

The study strips the subject down to a head, a neck and the top of one clothed shoulder. There is no rope, no cuff, no gesture and no second figure. The claim it makes is that submission in a picture is carried by the face and can be described without any of the usual equipment.

The governing decision is the angle of the eyes. They are turned roughly fifteen degrees off the viewer, which is a very small adjustment with disproportionate consequences. Straight out, the look would return the viewer’s attention and establish a negotiation. Fully averted, it would read as withdrawal or shame. At fifteen degrees the figure is neither meeting the viewer nor hiding, and the picture holds still in that gap.

Everything else supports the angle. The chin is level rather than lowered, which keeps the reading away from submission-as-defeat. The white chalk is used sparingly: a highlight along the cheekbone, one at the inner corner of the eye, one at the throat, all on the side turned towards the viewer, so the illuminated half of the face is the half being offered. The shadowed half stays with the sitter.

The toned paper does the rest, supplying the middle value so that charcoal and chalk only need to describe the extremes. The result is a portrait that is composed and self-possessed while very plainly having given something away.
